How Long Do I Have to Sign Up for Obamacare for 2027? This Year, Double Check Your State's Deadline

Every October the same thing happens: someone messages me asking if they're still in time for Obamacare. Almost always, the answer is yes. But this year I want to ask you for one more thing. Besides the federal date, check your state's date. Not every state follows the same calendar, and mixing up a few days can leave your family without health insurance for a whole year. I've been doing this for 15 years, and I've seen it happen more often than I'd like.

The federal date: November 1 to January 15

Open enrollment on the federal Marketplace for 2027 plans runs from November 1 to January 15. During that window anyone can enroll, switch plans, or renew without having to prove any special situation. If you live in a state that uses HealthCare.gov, that's your date. One detail a lot of people miss: the day you enroll affects the day your coverage starts. That's why I don't recommend leaving it for the last week.

Why I'm asking you to check your state this year

Some states run their own health insurance marketplace and can set dates that differ from the federal ones. Of the eight states where I'm licensed, Texas, Florida, and Arizona use the federal platform. California, New York, Illinois, Maryland, and Virginia run their own marketplace, and in those states it's the state that decides when enrollment closes. It isn't always January 15. On top of that, Marketplace rules get reviewed every year. So I won't hand you a date from memory or the one your neighbor mentioned. Before you decide anything, we confirm it together on your state's official portal, because that's the only date that counts.

What missing the deadline really costs

This is where a date turns into money. If enrollment closes and you don't have a life change that opens a Special Enrollment Period, you're usually locked out until next season. That means months without health insurance, and any trip to the ER, any test, any prescription comes out of your pocket at full price. What hurts me most to see is this: many Hispanic families qualify for a subsidy based on their income and household size, and some end up paying $0 or close to $0 a month, if they qualify. Missing the date isn't just losing coverage. It's losing help that was already yours.

If you already missed it, there may still be a way in

The rest of the year there are Special Enrollment Periods. If you get married, have a baby, move, or lose your job-based insurance, you have 60 days from that change to enroll without waiting for November. If you're in one of those situations today, you don't have to wait for open enrollment. And if you're not sure whether your situation counts as a life change, ask me. I'd rather we look at it together than leave you guessing.

What I recommend having ready before November 1

  • An honest estimate of your household income for 2027, since that's what your subsidy is based on.
  • How many people you'll include on your tax return.
  • The names of your doctors and your medications, so we can check the plan covers them.
  • If you already have Obamacare, the renewal letter the Marketplace sends you.

And something I always repeat: by law, no plan can turn you down or charge you more because of a preexisting condition. Having diabetes or high blood pressure doesn't close the door. The real quote is done at plansaludfamiliar.com, and premiums are set by the Marketplace, not by me. If you'd like to read a bit more before we talk, I have a simple guide at /hablemos-de-obamacare.
