How your final expense payment is calculated: the 6 facts that move the price

Every week someone asks me the same question: "Mario, how much does final expense insurance cost?" And every week I give the same answer. It sounds like I'm dodging, but I'm not: it depends on you. Not on a salesperson, not on some trick. It depends on a handful of very specific facts about your life. I've been doing this work for 15 years, and I've seen that once people understand how the price is built, they stop being afraid of the quote. So let me walk you through the 6 facts that move your monthly payment. That way, when you talk to me or any other agent, you'll know exactly what you're being asked and why.

1 and 2. Your age and your health: the two that weigh the most

Age is where everything starts. This coverage is available from age 30 to 85, and the younger you are when you start, the lower your payment usually is, because the insurance company expects to collect premiums for a longer time. That's why I always say the best age to get it is the age you are today. You won't be any younger tomorrow.

Health is the second big factor. There's no medical exam, but there are health questions, and your answers matter. A lot of people assume that because they have diabetes or high blood pressure they won't qualify. That's not true: those are common conditions and they're accepted. What can change is the price, depending on how well controlled they are, which medications you take, and whether you've been in the hospital recently. My advice is simple: always answer truthfully. A wrong answer can cause problems right when your family needs that money the most.

3 and 4. Tobacco and gender: the facts you can't negotiate

If you smoke or use tobacco, you'll pay more. It isn't a punishment. It's how the insurance company measures risk, and tobacco counts heavily. If you've quit, tell me, because depending on the company, how long you've been tobacco free can change your rating. Gender is part of the math too. In general, women pay a little less than men of the same age, because they tend to live longer. You can't change it, but it's good to know so you're not surprised when you and your spouse get different quotes.

5. How much coverage you choose

This is the one fact you fully control. More coverage means a higher payment, and less coverage means a lower one. But the right question isn't how much can I afford, it's how much will my family actually need. In Texas, the average funeral costs around $9,200 according to the NFDA, and the real quotes I've seen range from $4,000 to $18,000, depending on the city, the funeral home and what the family decides. You don't have to go to the maximum. You just need a number that makes sense for you and your budget.

The right question isn't how much can I afford, it's how much will my family actually need.

6. The type of plan you qualify for

Not every final expense plan works the same way. Based on your health answers, the insurance company may offer you a plan that pays the full benefit from day one, or one with a waiting period before the full coverage kicks in. That second kind usually costs more and protects less at the beginning. That's why I don't like guessing. I'd rather look at your situation calmly and find the option that gives you the best protection for what you pay. And one thing I always make clear: the money goes straight to your beneficiary, not to the funeral home or a middleman.

What to have ready before you ask for a quote

  • Your exact date of birth and a list of the medications you take.
  • A realistic amount: what a simple service would cost where you live.
  • Your beneficiary's name, the person who will receive the money.
  • A monthly payment you can keep up without squeezing the household budget.

With that information, an honest quote takes just a few minutes. And if after we talk you decide it's not the right time, that's okay too. My job is to help you understand your options, not to push you into signing anything.
