November 1 is still on: what you can have ready today so you are not rushing

August is ending and families are already calling me to ask whether open enrollment moves this year. Short answer: it does not. November 1 opens and January 15 closes, same as always. The longer answer is the useful one, because you have more than two months between today and that date, and two months is the difference between walking in calm and walking in with half your paperwork missing.
What actually opens on November 1
It is the federal Marketplace open enrollment period, what most of us call Obamacare. During those weeks you can pick a health plan for the first time, renew the one you already have, or switch to something that fits your family better. The technical part is not what slows things down. What slows it down is sitting with a family that does not have the household income estimate handy, is not sure who files taxes together, and cannot find everyone's documents. That is how a forty minute appointment turns into three phone calls across three different days. None of what follows requires you to be enrolled or to spend a dollar: it is information that already exists in your house, it just needs to live in one place.
What you can gather starting today
- Your household income estimate for next year, not what you earned last year. If you work for yourself or by season, an honest average of recent months beats a round number.
- Who lives with you and who files taxes together. Household size moves the math as much as income does.
- Identity and immigration status documents for everyone going on the plan, with names spelled exactly as they appear on the document.
- Correct dates of birth for everyone, children included.
- Whether anyone in the house has an insurance offer through work, and what it would cost. That single detail can change the whole result.
- The doctors you do not want to lose and the medications your family takes, with names and doses.
- What you can actually afford each month, without dressing up the number.
The income estimate is the hardest one and the one that matters most. This is not the place to guess in your own favor. Put it too low so the help looks bigger, and tax season takes it back. Put it too high, and you overpay all year long. An honest income number is the one that lets you sleep in April.
Subsidies get calculated, not guessed
Marketplace help depends on two things: how much comes into the house and how many people live in it. Plenty of Hispanic families qualify to pay zero or close to zero a month, and I have seen that outcome more often than people expect, but I always say it the same way: if you qualify. I am not going to hand you a number over the phone before I see your situation, because premiums and subsidies are set by the Marketplace, not by me. If life changes before or after that window
Open enrollment is not the only door. When a life change happens (you get married, a baby is born, you move, you lose coverage through a job) a Special Enrollment Period of 60 days opens so you can sign up out of season. Those 60 days are real, they get counted and they run out, so if something like that happens to you in March, do not wait until November. One more thing many people still do not know: by law, no Marketplace plan can turn you down or charge you more for a preexisting condition. Diabetes, high blood pressure, your child's asthma, none of that closes the door on you.
The coverage that does not wait for a calendar
Here is a distinction that confuses a lot of people. Health insurance has a season. Final expense and life insurance do not: they can be started any day of the year. And while you wait for November, it is worth asking what would happen at home if the person who carries the bills were gone tomorrow. A funeral in Texas costs about $9,200 on average, according to the NFDA, and the real quotes I have seen run from $4,000 to $18,000 depending on the funeral home and what the family chooses. A final expense policy starts at $30 a month, with no medical exam, for ages 30 to 85, and it accepts common conditions like diabetes or high blood pressure. Approval usually takes around 48 hours, and the money goes straight to the beneficiary, with no long process in the middle. If what worries you is the mortgage or your family's income, that is a life insurance conversation, with coverage starting at $50,000.

For Marketplace health plans, the subsidy depends on your income and household size, and the if you qualify always applies: neither I nor anyone else can guarantee you an amount in advance.
